The Wendelstedt Umpire School is happy to announce the addition of a new off-field staff member. Dr. Steve Dorsey will be joining the staff as the Wendelstedt medical coordinator. Dorsey is responsible for the health and wellness of the student body, and will instruct the students on nutrition, fitness, and the prevention and treatment of injuries.

His hiring means that students in attendance will be enrolled at the only umpire training program offering a physician on staff. The on-field staff consists of Minor League umpires, D1 NCAA college umpires, and MiLB Umpire Development supervisors (formerly called PBUC). The Wendelstedt Umpire School is also the only program to also offer Major League umpires on its instructional staff.

Dr. Dorsey completed his Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology at the University of California at Los Angeles then obtained his medical degree from the Wake Forest University School of Medicine. He did his post graduate medical training in Phoenix, Arizona, and is a fellow of the American Board of Family Medicine. His focus is on orthopedic and sports medicine, occupational medicine, and tropical and rural medicine. In 2003, Dr. Dorsey and his wife, Julie, moved to the Dominican Republic to start Del Corazon de Jesucristo, a Christian ministry that provides medicine, education and sports to the rural community of El Catey. He was a staff physician for the Arizona Diamondbacks at their professional academy in Boca Chica from 2003 to 2009. He spends his time operating the clinic in the DR and in Phoenix, Arizona working for Banner Occupational Health Services.

He and Julie have two sons, Christain Cuevas, who is completeing dental school in Santo Domingo, and Harley Acosta, an alumnus of the Wendelstedt Umpire School and current umpire with MiLB. In 2016 Dr Dorsey attended the Wendelstedt Umpire School with his son Harley, where he developed a love and respect for the people and profession. His goal is to help umpires be the best they can be; physically, mentally and spiritually.
