Al Somers was known as the finest umpire instructor of his time. Called with affection "The Whip", he commanded on the field and in teaching his craft with a firm dedication. He helped thousands into umpiring careers. Seventy former students reached the majors.

Most of all, Al was a man with a big heart. He cared about people. He helped so many. His devotion to the Catholic Church was the center of his being. Al will be greatly missed. He made a difference in the world.
